Sustainable Transport
The new paradigm for transport was made very clear in 2006 by the Stern and Eddington reviews. Growing congestion in urban areas is costing the UK economy money – Eddington estimated that, unchecked, it would amount to £22 billion by 2025. Ultimately, the climate impacts of emissions from transport could be even more costly.
Transport currently accounts for 23% of UK CO2 emissions, and is the sector identified by Stern as the most difficult in which to reduce emissions. More recently, the Government-commissioned King Review of Low Carbon Cars identified the technological options that will be necessary to reduce the CO2 impacts of road vehicles.
In the short term, making transport more sustainable will require greater efficiency in the ways and means by which we travel – more efficient fuels and vehicles, and rapid adoption of the latest technology. In the long term, to maintain our standard of living on a crowded island, the challenge in transport is to decouple ‘accessibility’, our ability to access the goods and services we want, from ‘mobility’, the ability to travel anywhere, anytime.

AEA manages the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI) on behalf of the UK Government. Through this work, we are responsible for providing Government with annual official estimates of emissions from all sources, including the transport sector. Our unrivalled expertise in this area means that we are uniquely placed to be able to provide our clients with access to the UK’s leading experts on transport emissions. We combine this with a long track record of implementing programmes that deliver practical change on the ground such as via freight and fleet efficiency measures and travel planning.
