The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) - the league table

Each year, other than the first (which is a reporting year only), organisations included in the CRC scheme will buy allowances to cover their forecasted carbon emissions.

Of this total amount of purchased allowances, organisations have the opportunity to lose or gain a percentage of this money depending on their position in the CRC league table.  The recycle payments are significant.  In Sale 1, the percentage is 10%.  In subsequent years it grows to 50%.

League table position and the CRC recycle payments are based on a series of metrics.  As illustrated below, these are:

  • Early action - Carbon Trust Standard (or equivalent) and non-mandatory automatic metering give you a 5% bonus each in sale 1. You need to establish a business case for investing in both of these options.
  • Absolute emissions reduction.
  • Emissions reduction versus growth.

After 2013, the recycle payments are based entirely on these second 2 metrics. You will need to have a plan for continued emission reductions, year-on-year, to ensure that absolute reductions compare favourably with the other 5,000 organisations in the scheme and that you receive the highest possible recycle payment.
