Dr Adam Read, AEA's Global Practice Director for Waste Management & Resource Efficiency has been interviewed on Channel 4's new documentary series the People's Supermarket.
The new supermarket concept is aiming to stir a retail revolution by serving the local community with good cheap food that's fair to consumers and producers. During this week's episode [Sunday 20th February], he meets with the founder of the People's Supermarket Arthur Potts-Dawson at a food waste recycling centre.
Dr Read explains to Arthur the origins of food waste production - consumer choice, supermarket shelving policy, and convenience, and looks more closely at the food waste arriving on site which comes from local households and supermarkets. The UK is generating over 8.2 million tonnes of food wastes per annum, and this site is successfully managing over 100 tonnes per day, generating new products - heat and energy - and employing local people.
